On 20 August, Amazon is to cease supporting its Android Appstore, with apps already downloaded onto Android devices set to continue working, but with no guarantee they will operate as normal once Amazon ceases updates.
The app will still be available on Amazon’s Fire TV and Tablet devices, where it remains the default app marketplace.
The decision comes as Microsoft prepares to end support for Amazon’s Appstore on Windows in March.
Amazon is also killing its Amazon Coins program, where users can purchase a virtual currency to buy apps and items in the Appstore.
Users will be refunded for any remaining coins in their accounts after 20 August.
Amazon’s decision to end support for its Android app comes as it struggles to compete with Google’s Android marketplace.
