Summary
EU regulators are forcing Apple to allow third-party app stores and sideloading onto its devices in the region, and now it seems those rules may also force it to open its operating systems to greater interoperability with competitors.
Specifically, regulators are forcing Apple to allow competing smartwatches, earbuds, and headsets to access its services directly on its iPhones/iPads.
European regulators have also increased scrutiny of Apple’s rumored hypothetical four-figure “selling point” for AI features like Live Text and Spanish on iPhone, with the company being accused of skipping the features altogether in the EU, thus skirting around competition rules.
It was also recently revealed that Apple is planning to charge developers a massive $1 million subscription fee to use anything but its in-app purchase system for sales in the EU, which has now become a formal investigation.
