Epic Games v. Apple: the fight for the future of the App Store
2 min read
Summary
Epic Games and Apple’s legal battle over numerous antitrust allegations and the removal of the popular game Fortnite from the App Store is still ongoing.
Apple has been ordered to allow developers to use external payment methods in their apps and now it looks like there could be another significant development.
Last week, Apple filed a request to the courts to delay the enforcement of the ruling on the anti-steering rules, which restricts developers’ ability to direct users towards other payment methods, for five months.
This is because Apple is appealing the ruling and wants to retain its current policy on payments until the appeal has been resolved.
This comes after in June, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled in the landmark lawsuit brought by Epic Games, that Apple would have to allow developers to use alternate payment systems.
However, Apple is refusing to budge and says it will appeal the ruling stopping it from enforcing its anti-steering rules.
At the moment, Apple is still demanding a 30% commission on any transactions made through these external payment methods.
It seems as though Apple is trying its best to stall any changes to its App Store policies for as long as possible.
