UK newspapers blanket their covers to protest loss of AI protections

Summary
Major UK newspapers have united to protest against proposals that threaten to weaken copyright protection for content used to train AI models.
The initiative is called Make It Fair, and was created by the News Media Association (NMA), along with the Creative Rights in AI Coalition, to fight government plans to allow AI companies to use copyright-protected content without permission.
The scheme was launched on the final day of the government’s public consultation on its proposed changes to copyright law relating to AI.
The consultation proposed allowing exceptions to copyright law that would enable AI training on copyrighted works “for any purpose”, including commercially.
Creators would be allowed to opt out of the changes via a so-called “rights reservation” process, but this would place the onus on individuals to ensure their works are protected.
