Since Microsoft closed its acquisition of Skype in 2011 for $8.5bn it has struggled to adapt the service to a world dominated by mobile devices from Google and Apple and [has now decided to shut it down](https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/12/23543709/microsoft-laying-skype-to-rest- conceded-products-retirement) completely from mid-2025 onwards.
The Skype division was focused on a touch-friendly Windows 8 app soon after the Microsoft acquisition, but the focus soon shifted to mobile, and it started moving users over to its Messenger platform, with many bugs and basic problems with calling and messaging.
