Summary
OpenAI has released a new Responses API to help developers build AI agents.
The Agents SDK also launched to help developers “orchestrate” the workflow of AI agents, making it simpler to manage these agents and ensure they work harmoniously towards a singular goal.
The new APIs build on the Chat Completions API, which lets developers create AI tools that respond to customers’ queries, and will replace the Assistants API in mid-2026.
The Responses API includes a web search tool replicating ChatGPT’s web search functionality, a tool to search large volumes of documents and a feature to use the Operator model to perform tasks on a user’s behalf.
Olivier Godement, head of product for OpenAI, expects developers to use the foundations to create industry-specific agents.
