FTC asks to delay Amazon Prime deceptive practices trial

Summary
Attorneys at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) asked a federal judge to delay the case against Amazon by two months, citing staffing losses and a potential office move that could affect their preparations.
The FTC team lost employees in the agency and on the case team, and a sudden move to a new office could disrupt staff, revealed FTC attorney Jonathan Cohen at a status hearing.
The FTC’s request comes after around a dozen probationary staffers were recently terminated, although the FTC has so far avoided the wider cuts seen at other agencies such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Department of Education.
The FTC filed suit against Amazon in June 2023, alleging that the company deceived millions of customers into signing up for its Prime subscription and made it difficult to unsubscribe.
The case, which is now with Republican FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, is set to begin on 22 September.
