Summary
Sony revealed a new display technology called General RGB LED Backlight Technology that combines the best features of OLED and Mini LED televisions.
While OLED TVs offer better contrast, Mini LED displays can achieve higher brightness, and Sony’s new tech aims to address some of their limitations, such as limited colour accuracy and poor viewing angles.
The new system uses a trio of red, green and blue LEDs for each backlight zone, which allows finer colour tuning and higher overall brightness of around 4,000 cd/m2, while also allowing the panels to be manufactured at larger sizes than current OLED TVs, according to Sony.
-Sony is yet to announce commercialization of the new technology, but it does look promising according to a recent hands-on by The Verge.
