Summary
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has announced its largest-ever takeover of New York-based cybersecurity firm Wiz, for an estimated $16 billion.
This is the second attempt at the deal after talks fell through last year over antitrust concerns.
The deal is awaiting regulatory approval, but if it goes ahead it will be larger than Google’s $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility in 2012.
Wiz is a fast-growing Israeli startup that provides cloud-based cyber security to protect companies such as Amazon and Microsoft.
The purchase is the latest in a string of acquisitions aimed at bolstering the search engine’s cybersecurity offerings for its cloud computing customers.
In 2022, Google acquired cybersecurity firms Siemplify and Mandiant for 500mand5.4bn respectively.
