Meta AI will launch in 41 European countries and 21 territories this week, almost a year after Ireland’s data protection regulator asked the company to pause training its AI models on European user data.
European users will only have access to the AI chatbot function, which uses information from the web to answer questions and assist with trip planning, for now.
Meta has engaged with European regulators over the past year and plans to “find parity with the US and expand our offering over time”, according to a spokesperson.
However, functions such as image generation and editing will not be available in Europe, nor will the ability to ask questions about a photo, as the AI model hasn’t been trained on European data.
The company also halted the launch of its Llama AI model in the EU due to regulatory concerns.
