Magnetic wireless charging for smartphones has been a mess for the past few years.
Apple made its own MagSafe charging standard that only works with recent iPhones, and there are many MagSafe-compatible chargers that don’t work quite right.
Now there’s a new standard, Qi2, that makes it easier to choose a charger that will work reliably, charge up to 15W, and has the right strength and position of alignment magnets.
Unless you have an iPhone 16, MagSafe-certified chargers are no longer the best choice — they’re more expensive, don’t work with non-Apple phones, and are barely faster than the newer, cheaper Qi2 chargers.
