Trump’s plans to save TikTok may fail to keep it online, Democrats warn

Summary
US President Donald Trump is considering his options for preventing TikTok from going dark in the US on 5 April, including approaching Senate Republicans to support his “Extend the TikTok Deadline Act” bill or pursuing a partnership between TikTok and Oracle.
However, the options he is considering could leave TikTok’s service providers facing billions of dollars in liability unless Congress alters the original law on the app’s sale.
Senators Chris Van Hollen, Ed Markey and Cory Booker have written to Trump urging him to cooperate with Congress rather than trying to override the law.
Trump’s previous executive order attempting to delay the ban was ruled unlawful, and experts had said that even if service providers took Trump’s promise not to enforce the law at face value, the statue of limitations would extend beyond his presidency.
Trump has previously called for a full sale of TikTok’s US business to a US company.
