Summary
Google will pay $100m to settle a class action lawsuit that accused it of overcharging advertisers by activating ad clicks outside of the advertisers’ chosen geographic locations.
The lawsuit, which was first filed in 2011, related to California’s Unfair Competition law, with the claim being that the tech giant misled advertisers about ad placements.
As part of the proposed settlement, Google will also be required to disclose information about its ad-placement processes.
The settlement is yet to be approved by a California judge.
It follows extensive fact-discovery that Google said involved reviewing more than 910,000 pages of documents and multiple terabytes of click data.
