Apple releases AirPods Max update with lossless audio after brief delay

Summary
Apple’s AirPods Max headphones firmware version 7E99 was delayed without explanation last week, before eventually appearing as version 7E101 on Wednesday.
The firmware was supposed to arrive alongside iOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4 to enable new lossless audio and low latency features.
These functions allow the AirPods Max to match features already offered by the AirPods Pro.
In addition to the firmware, Apple also released a new USB-C to 3.5mm cable, allowing the use of the AirPods Max with devices that have a standard headphone jack.
The cable is pricey at $39, yet despite its cost it has been receiving favourable reviews.
