NanoWrimo has announced that it is closing down after more than 20 years of challenging writers to finish a novel in a month.
In 2023 participation declined due to the organisation’s failure to take a stance against the use of AI in writing, and one of its moderators was accused of child grooming.
The executive director stated that fundraising and participation had decreased in recent years and the organisation, which is no longer able to afford hosting its writing challenges, will remain online for as long as possible.
Despite NanoWrimo’s closure, writers can still challenge themselves to write a novel in November, and alternative challenges do exist.
