WordPress.com owner Automattic is laying off 16 percent of workers

Parent company of WordPress, Automattic, has laid off 16% of its staff, roughly 280 people in total, in an effort to protect the company’s future potential.
The decision comes in the wake of a lawsuit against Automattic from WP Engine, as well as a subsequent dispute with WordPress.org, which the company alleges could bankrupt them.
In October last year, CEO Matt Mullenweg offered staff $30,000 to leave their positions if they did not support his fight with WP Engine.
Following this, the company experienced a 8.4% staff exodus.
In a memo published on the company’s website, Mullenweg said the company had reached a crossroads where it had to improve productivity and profitability to support its customers and products.
