Summary
A new report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that using smartphone apps that track driver behaviour and provide feedback led to safer driving even after the tracking apps were turned off.
The study found that those who received feedback on their driving behaviour through the apps showed a decrease in bad behaviour such as hard braking and speeding.
Jake Nelson, AAA’s director of traffic safety advocacy, said the results showed that “positive reinforcement, not just punitive measures, can lead to safer driving habits that can save lives.”
The report suggests that tracking apps could be a useful tool to help reduce the number of deaths on the roads, which in 2023 rose to over 40,000 in the US.
