Meta has released a new suite of AI models, Llama 4, as an upgrade on the company’s AI assistant across its social media platforms.
The models include Llama 4 Scout, which is more modest in scale than previous models, and Llama 4 Maverick, which is closer to GPT-4o and Gemini 2.0 Flash in performance.
Meta is still developing Llama 4 Behemoth, its highest performing base model to date, which the company says will outperform competitors in certain tasks.
All models in the Llama 4 suite are “open source”, however, theirlicense restricts commercial use by companies with over 700 million monthly active users, which has previously been criticised for taking the model out of the open source category.
The models are available to use on the social media platforms or can be downloaded from Meta or Hugging Face.
At the company’s upcoming LlamaCon conference on 29 April, Meta plans to discuss future releases of its products.
