UK bans fake reviews and ‘sneaky’ fees for online products

Summary
Under new regulations that came into force on Sunday, online platforms operating in the UK will be required to include all mandatory fees in the upfront price of a product or service, ending the practice of “dripped pricing” where extra charges are only revealed at the checkout.
The law also introduces a ban on the use of fake reviews, with websites responsible for moderating reviews to ensure they are not falsified.
The regulations apply to food delivery services, ticket booking platforms and other sectors, but optional fees, for extras such as airline seat selection or upgraded baggage allowances, will not be affected.
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) can impose fines of up to 10% of a company’s global turnover for non-compliance with the new rules.
