Summary
Modular computing company Framework announced its quest to fix the problems of the humble entry-level laptop with its Framework Laptop 12 model, but US President Trump’s tariffs are making life difficult for the ambitious company.
Tariffs are making it difficult for the company to maintain competitively priced entry-level products, so much so that it has paused sales of its cheapest laptops and delayed preorders of its newest device in the range.
The Framework Laptop 12 starts at £499 in the UK, €569 in Europe and 719inCanada,andthecompanyhasnowannouncedthatUScustomerswillbeabletopreordertheitemfromtomorrow,startingat549.
While this is significantly more expensive than comparably spec’d machines, the Framework Laptop range is unique in that it promises a fully upgradeable laptop, with the ability to switch out motherboards and chips to extend the useful life of the machine.
