Summary
New York-based entrepreneur Jerome Dewald was removed from a courtroom and reportedly scolded for attempting to submit a video for his legal appeal that featured an avatar created by artificial intelligence (AI) company Tavus.
The incident, which took place in March, saw Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels become angered after an apparent lack of disclosure that the video’s contents were artificially generated.
The issue also raises questions about the legality and accuracy of submissions involving AI technology in courtrooms.
Two lawyers and a law firm were penalised in 2023 for submitting fictitious research produced by AI chatbot ChatGPT.
The “robot lawyer” service DoNotPay was also fined $193,000 in February after advertising its AI legal representation as being on par with that of a human lawyer.
