Meta has announced plans to begin training AI on data from its European Union (EU) users, specifically public posts, comments and chat histories on Facebook and Instagram.
The company intends to start notifying eligible users (those over 18) via in-app notifications and email this week, including a link where users can opt out.
The AI training has been delayed several times following concerns from Irish regulators.
When it comes into effect, Meta hopes the training will allow its AI to become more sophisticated and better reflect the usage context, including different humour and sarcasm styles amongst countries.
This is the second announcement of its kind, following a similar statement regarding UK users made last year.
The company admitted last year it had already been training AI on content from adult Facebook users’ public posts since 2007.
