Google has signed a deal with Baseload Capital to buy geothermal energy to power its facilities in Taiwan as part of its strategy to cut planet-heating emissions by half and match its electricity use with carbon-free energy by 2030.
This agreement is a first for Taiwan and will lead to the addition of 10 megawatts of carbon-free energy to the country’s power grid by 2029, doubling its commercial geothermal capacity.
Outside of Taiwan, Google is also considering investing in geothermal deals in Japan and Indonesia, and is working with the University of Newcastle to research geothermal energy development in Australia.
Power purchase agreements, which guarantee customers ahead of time, are expected to help developers build out more renewable energy projects as part of the transition away from fossil fuels.
