Google is paying Samsung an ‘enormous sum’ to preinstall Gemini

Summary
In an antitrust trial this week, it was revealed that Google pays Samsung a monthly fee to install its Gemini AI app on devices, adding to existing concerns about anti-competitive behaviour.
DOJ lawyer David Dahlquist called the payments Samsung receives from Google for preinstalling Gemini “an enormous sum,” and it is thought that the Department of Justice is pushing for a forbidding of such deals in the future as part of the trial outcomes.
Arguments are also ongoing as to the extent of the penalties for the tech giant, with Google wanting to only be obliged to give up such default placement deals.
It was also revealed this week that Google had only recently written to phone makers proposing amendment deals, and had also considered more restrictive proposals for partners to preinstall Gemini.
