The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has addressed the use of AI in filmmaking in new rule changes for the Oscars.
While the use of generative AI itself does not affect a film’s chances of acclaim, the Academy has said its use must be disclosed and judged on the degree of human creative input.
The decision comes after long strikes by actors and writers protesting against AI’s perceived threat to their industry.
The new rules also state that academy members voting for awards must have watched all films in contention, but honour system dictates they do not have to provide proof.
The changes are AMPAS’s first mention of AI in its rules and reflect the increasing prominence of AI in the industry.
