New smartphone labels for battery life and repairability are coming to the EU

Summary
From 20 June 2023, phones and tablets sold in the European Union (EU) will be required to display labels detailing their energy efficiency, durability and repairability, in a bid to increase consumer awareness of the environmental sustainability of their devices.
The ratings will be similar to those used for home appliances and TVs, with a scale of A to G for energy efficiency, and letter grades for durability and repairability.
Devices will also be required to meet certain ‘ecodesign requirements’, including waterproofing, drop protection and the availability of replacement parts within five to 10 working days.
This aligns with efforts to reduce electronic waste in the bloc, and to make devices more durable and easier to repair, thereby increasing their lifespan and reducing the need for replacement.
It is hoped the scheme will encourage more manufacturers to innovate towards greater sustainability.
