Summary
OpenAI has released a cheaper version of its ChatGPT tool, which it says is almost as smart as the original.
The lightweight model, which uses the o4-mini model, has been rolled out to all users, both paid and free.
It’s intended to provide shorter answers than the original, but at a lower cost to the company to serve.
Both versions are subject to monthly usage limits, with the new lightweight model available to free users for up to five tasks per month, and paid users of some tiers able to access both versions, for a total limit of 25 or 250 tasks per month depending on their subscription.
The cheaper model is being made available next week to Enterprise and Education users, also with a limit of 25 tasks per month.
