Summary
Indian game development company 88 Games, backed by 88 Pictures, has created its first title Kapih, a story-led platform video game that draws on the country’s rich cultural heritage for inspiration.
Based on the Hindu epic the Ramayana, Kapih is styled in keeping with Indian art forms such as Kalamkari, Thanjavur, Warli and Madhubani and uses the Sanskrit language.
The game was released on 8 March to coincide with International Women’s Day, with a mandate to “create an experience that feels deeply personal yet universally relatable”.
It features a local co-op mode, allowing players to team up through its various levels via a partnership inspired by the Hindu deity Vishnu, who is frequently depicted as having taken the human form of a turtle.
88 Games’ CEO said he wanted to “spark a sense of pride in our heritage”.
