Summary
Micron has become the first company to unveil a 1y (1-gamma) DDR5 memory chip, which it says will be essential to future AI processing.
The company is set to extend these chips to its broader portfolio of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips from the second quarter onwards.
AI features are becoming increasingly common in smartphones, such as visual search, translation and unblurring photos, and Micron’s new chips will enable 15% power savings, which will become increasingly important as smartphones are used more intensively for these features.
The company has also announced a range of mobile storage devices at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, including the world’s first G9-based USF 4.1 and USF 3.1 mobile storage solutions.
Current AI innovations include multimodal agents and federated learning, which are set to enable smartphones to learn users’ habits and make life more streamlined.
To keep up with the increasing need for memory and storage as a result of these developments, Micron is constantly working to optimise its roadmap.
