How external development became a critical layer in game development — Keywords CEO interview | The DeanBeat

Summary
Keywords Studios, which provides art, design, and co-development services for video games, has around 13,000 game developers across 25 different studios, according to a recent interview with its CEO, Andrew Day.
Day said the company had restructured its services to three divisions: create (co-development, design, art), globalize (localization), and engage (user acquisition, quality assurance).
There has been huge growth in the video game sector over the past few years, and Keywords has expanded through a mix of organic growth and acquisitions.
The company is looking to become more of a “platform” that can provide all the services a games company might need in-house.
There is a huge skills shortage in the games industry, but the sector is also facing a conundrum with the metaverse, blockchain, and play-to-earn, as companies try to work out how to plan their marketing and publishing around these new trends.
The Keywords CEO wants to make sure the company is “three steps ahead” of the industry so that it can help the industry “navigate this”.
These new trends are “a massive opportunity for creativity”, said Day.
