The strong opening comes despite weak reviews, although the film has reasonable expectations after being made on a $50m budget.
Since Microsoft’s acquisition of Minecraft in 2014 for $2.5bn, the game has grown to reach 204 million monthly active users.
The success of other gaming movies such as The Sonic the Hedgehog, and The Last of Us also suggests that adaptations could become a profitable enterprise for Microsoft.
Currently, the U.S. box office is down 32% from pre-pandemic levels.
