NTT launches physics of AI group and AI inference chip design for 4K video

NTT has announced the launch of its Physics of Artificial Intelligence (PAI) Group, a basic research group focused on the understanding of AI and machine learning to improve energy efficiency and increase trust in AI systems.
NTT has an annual R&D budget of $3.6bn and is the research division of Japan’s largest telecommunications company.
The group’s mission is to improve the trustworthiness and safety of AI through enhanced energy efficiency, controllability, and the understanding of how AI learns, makes decisions and accumulates knowledge, with the aim of designing cohesive and reliable AI for the future.
The group will continue to collaborate with academic partners, including Princeton and Harvard Universities, leveraging its previous work in neural network pruning and algorithm bias removal.
Separately, NTT has also announced a large-scale integration (LSI) for real-time AI inference in 4K video.
The low-power technology is designed for edge and power-constrained deployments and can, for example, enable a drone to detect individuals from 150m away, whereas conventional systems would limit the drone to 30m.
