Jagex takes survival game RuneScape: Dragonwilds into Steam early access

UK-based games studio Jagex has released RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the first new iteration of the RuneScape game in more than 10 years, in early access on Steam.
The action-adventure title is set on the long-forgotten continent of Ashenfell, which is infested with dragons, and tasks players with harnessing magic and uncovering ancient secrets in a bid to slay the Dragon Queen.
CEO Jon Bellamy said it was a big bet for the RuneScape franchise, which to date has generated $3bn and boasts 300 million registered users, with 1.3 million active subscribers.
Bellamy acknowledged that the industry has been plagued by layoffs and unsuccessful live service games, but added Jagex is aiming to “push the industry forward” and provide “the games that we think the industry deserves and the players want”.
