Astronomer’s $93M raise underscores a new reality: Orchestration is king in AI infrastructure

Summary
Data orchestration company Astronomer has secured $93m in a series D funding round led by Bain Capital Ventures, with participation from Salesforce Ventures and existing investors Insight Ventures, Meritech, and Venrock.
The funding is the latest example of the increasing importance of data orchestration to successful AI deployments.
As companies shepherd more AI projects from the experimental stage into production, they are discovering the crucial role that data orchestration plays in making those projects successful, says Andy Byron, CEO of Astronomer.
The company’s platform Astro is based on the open source framework Apache Airflow, which had more than 324 million downloads in 2024, more than all previous years combined.
Astronomer says 69% of its customers, who have used the platform for two or more years, are now using Airflow for AI and machine learning apps, a much higher rate than the broader Airflow community.
