Four popular video games, Defender, GoldenEye 007, Quake and Tamagotchi, have been added to the World Video Game Hall of Fame at New York’s Strong National Museum of Play, joining previous titles including Doom, Minecraft and Tetris.
Selected from a list of finalists that also included Angry Birds, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and NBA 2K, the games were chosen for their “significant influence on popular culture and the video game industry,” said the museum in a statement.
It highlighted the fact that the hybrid nature of gameplay in Defender helped to create a market for more challenging games in the early ’80s, while the immersive nature of its gameplay and its popularity in the multiplayer mode helped to establish the first-person shooter on consoles with GoldenEye 007.
The museum also cited the impact of Quake’s 3D engine and its influence on the nascent esports industry and the customisability of Tamagotchi, which inspired a new genre of pet-simulation games.
