OpenAI launches research preview of Codex AI software engineering agent for developers — with parallel tasking
1 min read
Summary
OpenAI has released a competitor service to AI coding startup, Windsurf, called Codex as a research preview, and it is available to ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise and Team users.
This latest release is a cloud-based AI software engineering (SWE) agent, built on a fine-tuned o3 reasoning model, executing multiple development tasks in parallel.
It can write features, fix bugs, answer specific questions relating to codebases and run tests, using a secure, isolated cloud sandbox.
It has been trained to infer code style, including whether to use an Oxford comma, following coding style guides.
It executes tasks without internet access, using only user-provided code and dependencies, to ensure secure operations and minimise misuse.
Early external users include Cisco, Temporal, Superhuman and Kodiak.
